No More Fridays!

I am not working on Fridays anymore. I’m just not doing it. Period. Why?

Well, lots of reasons, I suppose, but mainly because I don’t want to anymore. I want to have more leisure time. Don’t we all? I want to spend more time in the garage, or on my motorcycle, or maybe cruising around in my Cutlass. I also want to get in better physical shape, spend more time taking the dogs to the park, hanging out with my wife, and volunteering, either with church, or Malachi’s storehouse, or Atlanta Humane Society. Do I sound like a slacker? Maybe I do. I’ll own that. It’s cool. But honestly, what it boils down to is simply that I don’t need to work on Fridays anymore.

To be honest, Fridays have been light for quite some time. Fridays have never been a good day to push Salesforce changes to Prod, because if you put something in Prod and then walk away for the weekend, you open the possibility for something to be broken all weekend. Fridays have also never been a good day to make Salesforce changes in a Sandbox, because then you have to come back on Monday and try to remember where you left off. Fridays aren’t good for meetings, either, for the same reason; whatever you discuss will get lost in the flurry of things that happen over the weekend. For those reasons, I haven’t had full, productive days on Fridays for quite a while. I don’t think this will affect my overall pace or my workload, because there’s not as much overall work as there was 3 or 4 years ago. I’ve had a few clients slow their pace or change to other platforms, and I purposely haven’t tried to replace them, because I want to be able to have a sharper focus on the clients that I do have. But because of my weird work ethic, I’ve felt like I have to sit here at my desk and continue to push this mouse around. So I’ve been doing Trailheads (almost a triiple-star Ranger!) and Partner Training courses (learning more NPSP stuff). More recently, I’ve been looking at AI and Agentforce stuff, building a plan to skill up in those areas, as well. Those efforts aren’t wasted, but there are also plenty of other things I could work on that are more personal. For example, I upgraded to a Harley a couple years ago, and I haven’t even put enough miles on it to warrant an oil change. That’s sort-of depressing. My dogs are so happy when I come downstairs at the end of the day, because they know it’s time for a walk, and I realize that I have missed their joy all day long. And sometimes I also realize that I’ve been sitting in my chair for hours, barely moving, and I have to make them wait a few minutes so I can get my legs under me again before we can go check out the neighborhood. That’s not healthy. I’ve also got stuff around the house that needs to be cleaned up, like this bookcase full of old computer hardware and game CDs.

Anyway, the point is that there are other things that I could and should be doing rather than just sitting here at this desk, and unless I tell myself that it’s not a work day, I won’t do it. So I’m now telling myself (and whoever’s reading this, which is probably nobody) that Fridays aren’t work days anymore. They haven’t been productive work days for quite a while, anyway, so I am really just admitting that to myself and announcing it to you. But I honestly don’t expect this to change much, if anything. If I’m working on something for you that’s high-priority, I am going to continue working on it rather than letting lt sit there idle all day Friday. If you make an appointment with me by EOD Thursday for Friday, I will be available for you. And if you have something urgent come up on a Friday, I will do whatever I can to make myself available for you, just as I always have. The only real difference is that if a Friday is the first time I hear from you about something, then you will probably not hear from me until the following Monday. And let’s be honest, we all know I will have my phone on me, and I’ll probably be close to home, so I will see your request, and if it sounds like it’s important for me to respond or work on something right away, I probably will.

Let me know what you think about all this. I am truly interested in hearing what you all think. In the meantime, thanks for reading, and for being one of my awesome clients!

Website Update

Well, I tried to upgrade my site to SquareSpace’s latest ‘version,’ but I somehow ended up nuking my entire site and replacing it with some template, so I had to to back and pull my pages out of the trash and rework them a bit. I think I got everything back more-or-less the way it was, but if you have trouble finding anything, please reach out to me. I think it looks a little better, but it still looks a little old-school, so I may make some other changes to make it look a bit more modern. Honestly, I don’t think too many people are even bothering with my website, anyway, but it’s something you have to have, so there ya go.

New T&C

So I had to create a new T&C, because Grasshopper is requiring me to register my phone # in order to be allowed to send SMS messages to my customers. I find this ridiculous and unnecessary, since I will only ever send an SMS to one of my clients if they first send one to me, and I have no automation or marketing of any kind tied to it, but apparently 10DLC is a real thing, so if you’re reading this, you’d better to check out my new T&C. (And while you’re at it, please let me know if there are any typos, because I just pulled this out of my ass.)

No MFA Enforcement from Salesforce?

One of my wonderful clients made me aware of a change in policy by Salesforce regarding enforcement of MFA that I thouight was really interesting. I’ve quoted it below. Basically, they’re saying that their clients were great about adopting MFA, and so they have decided to back off of forcing everyone to use MFA. That means the stragglers are basically off the hook and don’t have to use MFA, right? Well, no. Your EULA still requires you to use MFA even if Salesforce doesn’t enforce it, but it’s still interesting that they’ve done a complete 180 on this after all this time when they’ve been telling us we had do do it “or else” they’d do it for us.

*  Regarding MFA enforcement for products built on the Salesforce Platform

Thanks to the partnership of our customers, the program to automatically enable MFA for products built on the Salesforce Platform has resulted in a high rate of MFA adoption across Salesforce orgs. Because of this success, and wanting to be respectful of our customers’ valuable time and resources, we’re shifting to a new notification model instead of technically enforcing MFA during the Summer ‘24 release (as previously planned). For more information, see 'What is the current plan for enforcing MFA for products built on the Salesforce Platform?' in theSalesforce MFA FAQ.

New Domain!!

There was a sale on domains towards the end of this y ear, so I scooped up a couple more, which means you can now reach me on those domains now, too. Truth be told, they all redirect to the same website you’ve been using all along, but it’s still one less thing to have to remember. Just punch “JTS Tech” or “jtstech” into your favorite search engine and you’ll find me. Or you can get specific and find me at:

jtstech.llc, jtstechllc.net, joestriggershack.com, jts.llc, jtstech.net, jtstechllc.com, or the new additions jtstechllc.net, joestriggershack.net, and jtstech.com (That last one is the only one that cost anything like real money.)

Why so many? Well, one might think that I’m being selfish or excessive hogging all those domains to myself. But to me, even though my brand is just me, and partially because my brand is just me, it’s important to protect it. The U.S. runs on small business, and reputation is important.

Down the street from me, there’s this little auto repair shop that’s been there forEVER, and which is very well-respected and trusted in the local area. It’s called “Tilly Mill Auto Service Center”. Several years ago, a brand-new shop opened barely a block away and decided to call themselves “Tilly Mill Auto Center”. I talked to the owner of the original shop, and he was livid! Clearly, the new shop is riding on his hard-earned reputation, and there’s nothing he can do about it. Both of them are on Tilly Mill Road, so the new guy has every right in the world to use that and put it on the sign outside his door, but how many people do you think just see the first sign that says “Tilly Mill <something” that looks like a repair shop and just pull in there? Honestly, we’ll never know. I’d like to avoid that. There’s only one “JTS Tech,” and if you know what the “JTS” stands for, then you’re one of my people, and that means something to me, so I want to protect that by holding onto all those domains and directing them to my meager website.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

2023 is almost a wrap, and I have high hopes for 2024. Although it will be an election year (therefore full of drama and hot air), I still think it will be better than 2023. I’m looking forward to new home projects, new clients, new projects, new work for my existing clients as the economy continues to improve, and new adventures! I plan to put some miles on the Harley, the Cutlass, and the Mazda, and earn some Skymiles. There’s a whole big world out there to see, and I’d like to see some more of it in ‘24.

2022 in a nutshell

2022 was a pretty good year for JTS! I worked hard, added a new certification,Salesforce Advanced Administrator bringing that total to 6, built some new integrations and some cool new features for some of you. I have between 6 & 11 “active” clients, depending upon how you count, including 2 in Real Estate, 2 loan/financing, 1 in construction & service, a recycling company, and even a non-profit running a call center. This is plenty to keep me busy, so I’m not necessarily looking to add any new customers or projects, but I’m always happy when y’all refer me to other people you know who might need Salesforce help, so don’t keep me a secret!

I also took time to visit some of you that I’d never met in-person before. I’d wanted to do this earlier, but the pandemic interfered. Now that things have calmed down a bit, it seemed like a good time. Travel may seem superfluous these days, and maybe I’m a little old-school, but I do see a benefit in actually shaking hands and having a face-to-face conversation. If I didn’t get to you, and you would like to have an onsite meeting, or just go to lunch, let me know. I don’t mind getting on a plane or taking a road trip. If you’re close enough to Atlanta, I might even bring my new (used) Harley.
2015 HD Fat Bob
(I had a clunky, old motorcycle before, but this one actually runs reliably!)

In addition to honest-to-goodness work for my awesome clients, I also did a good bit of volunteering this year. I worked with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Malachi’s Storehouse, MUST Ministries, Atlanta Humane Society, and helped with IT stuff at my church. (Shout out to my wife, Amanda, who does all of these charity events with me.) And although 1% seems like such a small amount, JTS also continues to be a member of Pledge 1%, because I agree with their drive to entrench charity in the core of corporate structure.

Looking into next year, I plan to continue with volunteer opportunities around my area, although I don’t have anything scheduled yet, but I plan to continue supporting local charities that I know help people when they need it. I’m always open to suggestions, as well, so if there’s a charity you know about that could use some help, please let me know.

Turning back to the professional side of things, I’m looking to continue to offer excellent service to my existing customers, focusing primarily on the long-term “care and feeding” of your existing Salesforce org, but without shying away from new functionality or even new implementations. While I do use some contractor help from time to time, I’m not looking to expand the practice beyond myself or pursue any services besides Salesforce. I’m looking at more new Certifications (maybe Service Cloud next), as well as the new-ish “Accredited Professoinal” certifications from the Salesforce partner program. If there are any particular skills you’d like to see me grow, please let me know.

On a more personal level, like a lot of people, I have been trying to find ways to spend less time sitting at my desk. I try to make time to walk my beloved dogs every day Valendogs,
but I don’t always make it. I've also improved my backyard, so I have some place other than my desk where I can sit and work, have meetings, or just enjoy the fresh air when it's nice out. I’m also starting to look for cafes, breweries, etc, where I can get out of the house and still be productive and available. So if you hear birds chirping or voices in the background and it’s distracting, I apologize. Please let me know and I’ll change my approach. My goal isn’t exactly to work less, or to slack off more. It’s just to be happier, more connected to the world outside my house, and more productive, which will turn into better support and progress for you, my wonderful clients. If there’s anything I can do to serve you better, please let me know.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for being a rock star JTS customer! I wish you all tremendous success in 2023. Please don’t hesitate to tell me what I can do to better serve you.

Advanced Admin

I admit it, I’ve been lazy about adding more certifications lately. There’s always an excuse, and getting work done for my clients is often at the top of the list. For whatever reason, work has been lighter in 2022, but I have still felt like I needed to be chained to my desk, so I just hadn’t gotten myself motivated to go take another exam. Well, I got motivated by the fact that Focus On Force let my Advanced Admin training assets expire without notifying me. I was a little annoyed, so I thought I might as well just go take the test and see if my occasional studying for that one over the past year or so had stuck. Well, apparently it had, because I passed with no trouble at all. I shouldn’t be surprised; I’ve been doing this Salesforce consulting thing for about a decade now.

I don’t know if anyone actually reads this, but if you do and have an opinion on what I should go after next, hit the “Contact” link at the top of this page and send me a recommendation. If not, I’ll just explore the certs that are available to me and see what might interest me.

Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day

Monday is a holiday for a lot of people.

Columbus Day is celebrated by a lot of schools, and it represents the day Columbus supposedly "discovered" America. Since we Americans love our country and our land, it makes a lot of sense to celebrate that day. Personally, I only ever worked for one company that closed for Columbus Day, and it was widely known that the owner just preferred to close rather than have half his people schedule time off or call in "sick" because their kids were out of school. That was a weird company. We weren’t allowed to celebrate our birthdays in the office, either, because it was too much of a distraction. Instead, we were to go home after lunch.

Monday is also Indigenous Peoples' Day. What happened after Columbus landed was nothing short of genocide. We infected the people who were already here with our diseases. We thanked them for their generosity and wisdom about how to grow food and survive here by slaughtering them and then, largely, by stealing their land and shipping them across the country to be penned up into "reservations" that did not look like home in most cases. I live in Georgia, so when I try to find Native things in my part of the country I can only find supposedly-native plants; there is virtually nothing left of the culture that used to reside here.

I could make a solid argument for celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day by visiting the Etowah Indian Mounds, or finding a local Native American art studio or gift shop and making a purchase to support a Native American somewhere, but to be honest, Indigenous Peoples' Day just wants to make me cry for the loss of culture over which my ancestors presided. The thought of celebrating Columbus Day make me scream about those same atrocities, as if I could impress my mindset on people in the past and change their minds about the atrocities they’ve already committed.

So, primarily because I don't know what else to do, I do plan to work on Monday, as usual.

World Champion Atlanta Braves!

Congratulations to my World Champion Atlanta Braves!!

I’ve been waiting a long time to say that. I remember 1995, Chipper Jones looking like a recent graduate, Wohlers pitching, Marquis Grissom’s catch, and the dog pile on the mound, but I’ve really been looking forward to the day when it would happen again. I wish we could’ve closed it out at home so I could be there, but I’m also afraid we might’ve burned the place down in celebration, so maybe it’s best we didn’t clinch at home. And since you’re wondering, yes, I did consider getting tickets in Houston and flying out there, but we did fly out there (to Arlington) last year, and we seemed to bring bad luck, so we didn’t want to jinx it. But there will be a parade on Friday, and we can celebrate with the team then. Until then, quite frankly I’m looking forward to catching up on some sleep now that it’s all over.

#DF21 No More Workflow

It has come to my attention that many-to-most of my readers are not Salesforce people. To those people, I apologize for this post, because it’s knee-deep Salesforce nerd stuff.

For years, even decades, SF recommendations have been to use the least-complex solution to a problem possible. So you start with a Formula field, and when that can’t do it you bump up to a Workflow Rule, and from there to Process Builder, and then Flow, and finally to Visualforce, Apex, Aura (Lightning Components) or LWC. Now I’m hearing that Aura is basically dead, there’s this new thing called Lightning Web Runtime (LWR), and oh, by the way, at Dreamforce ‘21, they’re tell us they want us to abandon Workflow and Process and just use Flow, instead. In fact, they have an internal goal to stop providing more than one solution to any given use case; just provide one good solution. So I guess that means we’re going to consolidate the archaic and beloved Apex Data Loader and the Import Wizard into something new and wonderful, too. But wait, they own Mulesoft, so does that mean we’ll just have to become Mule experts and use Mule to load our data? Oh, but they also own Slack now, so we’re going to merge Chatter and Slack into one tool that can do both internal/private and external communication??? (And yes, I know that Slack can already do that, so shaddup.)

But wait, what??? Flow sucks!! There’s no way to tell what automation is wrapped around a given object. All Flows just sit there in this huge, monolithic list, and you srsly have to open every one of them and look at what it does to even tell if it touches the object that you’re trying to troubleshoot. Plus Flow doesn’t perform as well. I’ve seriously had cases where I have pulled stuff out of Process and Flow and put it back in Workflow just to make it perform better!! So I’m pretty flabbergasted that I have to now abandon workflow. But yeah, as of about Spring ‘23 or so, we won’t be able to add any more Workflow or Process Builder processes. I’m going to need a minute…

…more to come…

Food Bank sorting

We are headed back to the Atlanta Food Bank to help them feed folks who are struggling. They have not been allowing volunteers in the facility for a while, due to the pandemic, but now that things have improved, we’re allowed back in again. So, yet again, the entire company ** is going down to the Food Bank to help sort food, or whatever else they need for us to do.

I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating.. I am grateful to have this opportunity to help others who need it, but I’m also grateful that I haven’t needed their help yet. That time may come, you never know. And if/when it does, the Food Bank will be there to help. The Atlanta Community Food Bank has seen a 300% increase in inquiries from folks seeking assistance since the dawn of the pandemic.

Hopefully, I will be able to come back here and add pictures later.

** all 1 of us. Plus Amanda.

MUST Ministries Day!

Last Friday, June 4th, JTS (Yes, the entire company!) went to MUST Ministries in Marietta, GA to help out however we could. MUST Ministries helps address the basic needs of individuals, families and children, providing clothing, food, hygiene kits and other needs to help out when they need it. We sorted some clothes, turning a large pile of shorts and shirts into racks organized by gender and size, so that folks who need them can easily find items that fit them. We also created 375 hygiene kits for children, to help them learn how to take care of themselves. That sentence speaks volumes, if you think about it. We’re trying to encourage and teach children to take care of themselves. That’s because their parents don’t have time, are absent, or perhaps are working so hard to make ends meet that they don’t have time to show them how to hold a toothbrush. I was blessed with 3 older brothers to teach me those things. It also means that we’re trying to teach them how to take care of themselves so that they (a) can do it themselves, and (b) know what they need in order to do so, so they can make sure they have it, so that (c) they don’t have to come back to MUST later.

Every time we go work at MUST, it simultaneously makes me proud to be helping and also want to cry. It’s hard to believe that folks are so needy that they need a quart bag with hotel soaps and shampoos in it, but in fact there are those people. A large percentage of folks served by MUST are “first-timers”, meaning it’s not the same people all the time. That’s really encouraging, but it’s also terrifying! When will it be my turn? When will it be your turn?

I encourage you to go and volunteer somewhere. Help build a Habitat house, sort food at the local food bank, deliver sermon recordings to homebound folks for the nearest church, or walk dogs for the nearest Humane Society. Whatever you choose to do, it’ll be worthwhile.

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.” Proverbs 19:17

MFA - Multi-Factor Authentication

Salesforce Requiring Multi-Factor Authentication

In the future

A few of my clients have reached out recently about the emails they’ve received from Salesforce saying they are going to require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). I thought it’d be a good idea to put some thoughts together on this, since it sounds like they’re forcing something on us.

Is it really required?

Yes, Salesforce is actually requiring this. That includes you.

But will it be required for everyone"?

Good question! Yes, really for everyone who logs in via the user interface.. Okay, now you can stop panicking; your integrations don’t use the GUI, so they will still be able to log in and run without waking you up in the middle of the night to get an authentication code or something. All users will be required to confirm their identity using a second method.

Alternatively: You CAN get around this by using Single Sign-On (SSO). You can use Google (like I do), Office 365, Microsoft Exchange, and many other Single-Sign on options. Because this offloads the authentication to something other than Salesforce, Salesforce can use the hand-sanitizer and declare themselves free of responsibility for authentication, so MFA vaporizes.

Why are they doing this to me?!?!?!?

There’s a great Q&A here from Salesforce, but the nutshell is that the threats to your org’s data are increasing every day, and passwords are just not secure enough anymore. Everyone knows that passwords can be shared super-easy, and many of us have them stored on sticky notes or in Google Sheets or something, and almost all of us use the same password all over the place, so if your password were to be exposed by one of the almost-daily hacks or data breaches, virtually all of your data would be fair game. So, as much as I hate to say it, we’ve got to do this.

*SIGH* Ok, how does it work?

MFA requires at least 2 ‘factors’ to be verified before granting access to the system. One factor is something that a user knows, such as their password. Other factors are typically something that a user has in their possession, such as their phone, or an authenticator app, or even a dongle with a rotating security code. So you’ve got lots of options for that second factor, including Salesforce’s own “Authenticator”. The way that works is, when you enter your username and password, you will be prompted to enter a code. Then you pull out your phone, open the Authenticator App, choose your org (if you have more than one), and enter the displayed code. Then boom, you’re in.

What does it cost?

There ARE some third-party authentication apps that cost money, such as the one I mentioned with the dongle with the rotating code, but if you use the Salesforce Authenticator app, it doesn’t cost you anything except the few seconds you have to spend each time you log in to enter that code.

What do I have to do?

You have to choose an authentication method, provision it, and then enable it in your org. Sounds simple, right? Well, there are some great Trailheads to show you more and to get you going. I definitely recommend starting with a sandbox first. Here’s a trailhead to get you started: User Authentication Trailhead

When do I have to do it?

This is the real important info, so it shouldn’t be at the bottom of this article, so I think I will copy this to the top, but you don’t have to do this until February 2022. They’re giving us plenty of notice.

Still have questions?

Great, I’m happy to help. Just click over to the Contact link at the top of the page and drop me a line.

Happy MLK Day!

Today we pause to celebrate the live and mission of the late Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr. He worked tirelessly to end racial segregation and to promote equality. I have a dream, too, and it’s that we can get to the point where we don’t have to talk about it anymore. I love that famous answer by RBG to the question, “When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court?” And on one hand, I agree with her, but, with all due respect to the late, great RBG, the real answer should be, “When we don’t have to talk about it anymore,” and I feel the same way about the current state of racial bias. I’m not saying we should just stop talking about it; I’m saying we should keep working until there isn’t anything to talk about.

I have mixed feelings about MLK Day; sadness and guilt.

Sadness: Because he was an amazing man, and we need more amazing men and women in our world. We need rule breakers. We need people willing to put their lives on the line for what they believe. We don’t have that anymore; we just have politicians, who constantly work to try and grow their power and keep their jobs, and businessman to constantly work to try and grow their power and keep their jobs. And we have the great masses of people just trying to get through the day, pay their mortgage, take care of their family, stay healthy and have time to play video games and watch movies.

Guilt: People killed MLK Jr. Okay, true, a person killed MLK Jr, and his name was James Earl Ray. (Although, Coretta Scott King and many others believe the FBI was involved.) Ray was a criminal; he should’ve been in prison at the time of the assassination. Nonetheless, he was a white man. Although I wasn’t there when a white man pulled that trigger, I still feel the guilt and shame. I feel some of that same guilt and shame when I think about Jesus’ crucifixion. Although I wasn’t there, it’s idiotic to think that I would’ve tried to defend him, with that whole crowd screaming “Crucify him!” I’m just not that brave. I’m sure I would’ve been chanting right along with that crowd. Nobody is that brave. At least, nobody I know. But the late, great Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. WAS that brave. And we shot him.

I’d like to think that if he were alive today, he’d still be an influencer. Maybe he’d be a politician. Maybe he would’ve been the first black president. I wonder if I would’ve voted for him. I hope I would’ve. I probably wouldn’t have, though. I expect he would’ve been a Democrat, and I probably would’ve let my Conservative political beliefs interfere with my decision-making process and keep me from voting for him. I guess we’ll never know.

We need more men and women like the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MUST Ministries

For our day of charity this year, JTS sent the entire company to volunteer at MUST Ministries in Marietta on December 8th. We spent half a day sorting hygiene products into family packs that MUST distributes to needy. While we were there, we helped load 10 bins of the kits that we assembled. While it may be shocking and surprising that people can be in need to the point of not having shampoo and toothpaste, it is reality, and people are even more in-need this year. Anyway, I encourage everyone to volunteer somewhere. Give a day, or a half day, and let your work help others.

Proud member of Pledge 1%

I’ve written about charity here before, because I think it’s important for us to take care of each other when we can, and to lean on each other when we have to. These are tough times for a lot of people, but all times are tough on somebody. Anyway, JTS is now a proud member of “Pledge 1%” (https://pledge1percent.org/). Essentially, it means that JTS pledges to take 1% of my profit and give it away to a worthy charity. So far this year, I’ve donated to Malachi’s Storehouse here in Dunwoody and MUST Ministries over in Marietta, and the entire company spent a day sorting food at the Atlanta Food Bank.

Let me know if you’d like to know more about the organization. Or just let me know that you saw my post. It’s nice to know that people keep up with my lame little JTS blog.

Post-Season

2020 is pretty much a throwaway year in a lot of ways, but the Braves are still playing, and we’re in the post. Amanda and I have seen the Braves play in every single major league ballpark except one, and that is the brand-new stadium in Arlington, TX, where the NLCS and World Series will be played this year. So, while being careful not to jinx anything, the JTS office may be closed for a company meeting at Globe Life stadium, if the Braves are still in it, and if some of those games are played. More to come as things develop.
